A touch of the Greek Islands came to Weymouth this summer with Mamma Mia! as the theme for this year’s musical theatre workshops.

Over two dozen youngsters aged 9-14 took part in the week, including a few from out of the area who were visiting family or friends for the summer. The activities began with fun drama games to enable everyone to get to know each other and help them work together in various groups. One parent commented that her daughter, “was rather nervous on Monday morning but had a wonderful week and is really glad she took part.”
Part of each day was also spent learning the songs with Heather Reed, WOW’s former musical director. Together with workshop director, Martine Burt, all those that wished to try for a solo line were heard and matched to the vocal parts they were best suited for, either as a soloist or part of a small group.
As the week progressed, Martine staged and led rehearsals of the musical numbers ready for the performance to parents.
Come Friday afternoon the young performers thrilled an audience of around 60 with their Mamma Mia medley – a fitting finale to another successful summer school.
