A Musical Farewell to a WOW Legend!

On Friday 27th June, the WOW family came together to celebrate the life of our beloved President and co-founder, Janet Stockley, in a moving service at the Weymouth Pavilion.

Janet was not only the driving force behind WOW for over 40 years, but also an inspiration to generations of young performers in the Weymouth area. Her passion for musical theatre, her belief in young people, and her commitment to high standards left a legacy that shaped the lives of hundreds.

Janet’s journey into youth theatre began with her own love of performing. Missing her singing, she auditioned for Weymouth Operatic Society and was soon cast as Nancy in Oliver!. The production’s success — and the enthusiasm of the young cast members, especially those playing Fagin’s gang — led to the idea of a junior group. With the support of Pauline Wooten, Janet took up the challenge. The very first WOW rehearsal took place on 22nd April 1982… and the rest is history.

As part of WOW’s tribute during the service, a group of WOW alumni — with Reuben representing our current cast — performed a heartfelt rendition of You Raise Me Up. The group was brought together, rehearsed, and conducted by Martine Burt, a former WOW member herself, fulfilling a request Janet had made to her at one of the shows Martine directed and choreographed for WOW.

Janet receiving NODA Special Achievement Award in 2016

Throughout her four decades of involvement, Janet served as Musical Director, Chorus Master, Chair, and finally as our President. Her dedication was recognised with numerous honours, including the prestigious Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club of Weymouth, and special commendations from NODA. She was genuinely moved — and typically modest — when receiving such awards.

We’re grateful to Stuart Morris for producing this video tribute capturing moments from WOW’s shows and celebrations – these reflect not just her achievements, but the deep affection and respect in which she was held.

WOW Show 2025

WOW will continue to build on the extraordinary foundation Janet laid. Our November production of The WOW Show at Weymouth Pavilion will be dedicated to her memory — and we know she would be proud of what her WOW family continues to achieve.
