The month of May saw our group perform two charity cabarets for Weymouth Rotary. The first of these was the ‘Wurzels and Friends’ Concert at Weymouth Pavilion Theatre and a week later at ‘Fayre in the Square’ during the Bank Holiday weekend
At the charity concert on 20th May, a dozen of our members performed a sparkling 20 minute set to close Act One. This followed performances by Weymouth’s Rock Choir and Let’s Dance. WOW’s set included musical numbers from Disney’s Newsies, 42nd Street and Our House as well as short rock ’n’ roll and Motown medleys. Their final number, in front of a very appreciative audience, was a sensational rendition of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins.
A week later at midday, eight of the group performed for 40 minutes to a large audience in Hope Square for the the Rotary’s Fayre in the Square fundraiser. On a much smaller stage they added numbers from School of Rock, Rent and Rock of Ages as well as a Beatles section. During ‘Twist and Shout’, Alex leapt from the stage to add extra engagement for the audience that was already enjoying the performances and the sunshine.
Rod Pattinson, who was mixing the vocals from the radio mics and backing tracks, praised the group’s performance, commenting that, “This must have been our third or fourth ‘FITS’ and without doubt the slickest. Strong vocals, synchro moves, full harmonies and such confidence flowing from that stage. You make me proud to have been part of it.”
